New Maruti Swift vs old
After all the spy pics and renderings, Suzuki has finally revealed the new gen Swift which will make its global debut next year. The new Swift will also enter India late next year for the large number of Swift fans in India. The new Swift will replace the current gen in our market which has been here for more than a decade and the brand is still going strong thanks to its sporty performance and styling. The Swift is very unlikely to be positioned in the Nexa chain and will be sold through regular Maruti dealerships to avoid any kind of clash with the premium offering Baleno.
The new Swift is expected to be bigger and better than before in terms of looks, features and performance. However, the biggest challenge for Maruti will be the positioning of this car in our market since it already shares its segment with the current Maruti king of the segment, Baleno and the new gen will also be positioned below Baleno. How will Maruti manage this and what will be the difference between the current model and the new model? Let us give you a preview of the scenario in detail.
Styling and dimensions
The new Swift will be bigger in size than the current model and looks more sporty and stylish than ever before. The first glance of new Swift is enough to tell you that you are looking at the Swift but in a very well dressed-up version. The front gets new headlamps, aggressive front grille including air dam and sporty front bumper. The side profile gets a unique rear door handle and blacked out pillar which is very well integrated with the side and rear profile of this car giving it a very sporty character along with its 16-inch alloy wheels. The new Swift will share its platform with the Baleno which will make it a very light car along with increased space inside including its bigger 265L of boot capacity. To differentiate the positioning of Baleno and new Swift, Suzuki has kept the new Swift quite close to the body dimensions of current Swift which means the new Swift will be shorter than the Baleno.
The current model of Swift measures 3850mm in length along with a width of 1695mm and we can expect the new Swift to be quite similar in size. The new Swift will likely have a longer wheelbase than the current Swift which has a wheelbase of 2430mm however the new Swift may share its ground clearance of 170mm with the current model. The new Swift is likely to ride on 16-inch wheels while the current model uses 15-inch wheels.
Engines
The biggest similarities lies in this department as the new Swift will carry forward the choice of two engines from the current model. This includes two engines; one is a 1.2L, 83bhp petrol engine and the second engine is a 1.3L, 74bhp multijet diesel engine. The petrol engine will have a torque output of 113Nm and will come standard with a 5-speed manual gearbox same as the diesel engine which has a torque output of 190Nm. Also keeping the AMT trend in mind, there are chances that Maruti may introduce both engines in the new Swift with AMT gearbox since they will soon be doing this with Ignis which will have the same engines. The new Swift is also expected to feature the 1.0L, 3-cylinder, 110bhp turbocharged petrol engine which will be on offer with a 5-speed manual gearbox.
Features
The upcoming Swift will be a new age Maruti car which will be stuffed with all premium and safety features. This will make the new Swift an extremely safe car as it will come standard with Dual front airbags and ABS with EBD and Brake assist. Apart from this, both cars will share features such as fog lamps, alloy wheels, rear de-fogger, wiper, power foldable and adjustable rear view mirrors, power windows, auto climate control, touchscreen infotainment system with apple car play and android connectivity, navigation system, Bluetooth connectivity, steering mounted controls, rear parking camera and push button start/stop etc. Apart from this, the new Swift will have LED headlamps, tail lamps, new MID, sporty steering wheel and all new spacious interiors. More new features in the Swift will be elaborated later next year.
Price and Verdict
The current Swift starts from INR 4.90 lakhs (Ex-showroom, Delhi) and with Ritz being already phased out, it is very much expected that the new Swift will be launched very close to the pricing of current model. The new Swift is a very improved version of the brand Swift and it is likely to carry on the success from the current Swift to new heights. The new car looks stylish, gets new and premium features, peppy and fuel efficient engines and most importantly it has spacious interiors with improved material quality inside. The new Swift will make sure it leaves no doubt in the mind of Maruti lovers to go to any other brand than it. The positioning will very much decide the fate of new car but that situation will only clear once the new car is launched next year.
